be to carry out such routine surveys as may be

necessary, including the survey of foreign going

passenger steamers, to instruct the staff of the

Department in the duties of a Marine Surveyor,

and to advise the Government of Hong Kong on the

organisation of the Department.

Your engagement for service under the Hong

nong Government would be limited to a period of

six months, exclusive of the periods of the voyages

out and home. The Governor would however have

power to terminate your engagement at any time

during this period. For the whole period of your

secondment (including the periods of the voyages)

you would receive the full salary (and bonus) of your

substantive appointment under the Board of Trade,

together with an additional special allowance at the

rate of £300 a year.
